City and regional services use the bus lanes in Brighton and Hove

The council's environment committee gave the green light on Thursday to CCTV cameras being used in Dyke Road, Western Road and North Street.

The three roads are a main route for public transport.

"Drivers flouting the regulations is an ongoing issue and we have been seeking ways to deal with it for many years," Councillor Craig Turton said.

'Not happy'

Roger French, from Brighton and Hove Bus Company, said buses were being delayed by motorists "abusing clear signs that say no entry".

Bus driver Vernon Pratt said: "It can set you back 10 to 15 minutes and people are not happy when you turn up late."

A council spokeswoman said that "removing cars illegally using the bus corridor will help the buses provide frequent, reliable services and improve the environment, especially air quality, for shoppers".

The CCTV plans would see enforcement being carried out by the council's traffic control centre at Bartholomew House, although it could be several months before the system is up and running.
