Baby born in Asda first aid room
Baby Freddie
Freddie O'Keefe was born weighing 9lb 8oz
A woman gave birth in a supermarket first aid room after going into labour as she did her shopping.

The drama was played out at the Asda store in Crawley, West Sussex, and ended with a baby boy being born.

Vicky O'Keefe's contractions began as she was walking down an aisle at the supermarket on Sunday afternoon.

The 21-year-old mother spent an hour in the first aid room, with a midwife, a paramedic and the store's first-aider all helping to deliver son Freddie.

Paramedic Duncan Jones said: "This was the lady's third child and although she obviously would have preferred to have been in hospital, she recognised things were happening too quickly for that."

Champagne and nappies

Mr Jones said a healthy baby boy arrived within an hour.

After the birth, Ms O'Keefe and her new son were taken to the East Surrey Hospital for a check-up.

Asda spokeswoman Tracy Elliman said: "This is the first baby we have had born in our store since we opened two-and-a-half years ago.

"Kerry, our first-aider, did an excellent job and remained with the mum throughout.

"We presented the lady with a celebratory bottle of champagne and will also be pleased to provide her with a year's supply of nappies for her new son."
