Sun lights up dark bus timetables
Bus Stop
Ten solar powered bus stops will be installed in the city each year
A solar powered bus stop has been installed in Sussex after passengers complained the timetables were difficult to read after dark.

The eco-friendly technology at the bus stop in Queens Park Terrace is the first of its kind in Brighton and Hove.

It is fitted with photovoltaic cells that store energy in a battery during the day - when a button is pressed the timetable is illuminated.

The council hopes to install 10 similar bus stops each year until 2011.

It said the "back-lit" bus stops were a greener alternative to increasing street lighting, which would use more energy and increase light pollution.

Councillor Gill Mitchell said: "This is another good example of the council responding to what its customers need in a positive and sustainable way."

The council is also considering the use of solar powered bus shelters.
