Deadline nears for waste comments
North Quay, Newhaven
Campaigners are fighting plans for an incinerator at North Quay
Campaigners opposed to plans for an incinerator have taken letters of objection to East Sussex council ahead of the Friday deadline for comments.

Friends of the Earth and the campaign group Dove gathered at County Hall, Lewes, on Thursday.

Onyx, the firm behind the plans has set up an exhibition about the application.

The company has said the plan will cut landfill use, generate electricity and help reduce climate change by replacing power generated by fossil fuel use.

A 1bn contract went to Onyx in 2003 to dispose of all household waste in East Sussex for 25 years.

When it was given the contract it proposed building the incinerator at Newhaven by 2009.

Friends of the Earth (FoE) said the charity had been "overwhelmed" by the support for its campaign in East Sussex.

Brenda Pollack, FoE regional campaigns co-ordinator, said: "Many people were not aware that their rubbish might be dumped on Newhaven."
