Cyclist promotes South Downs plan
South Downs Way
Mr Hilliar hopes to complete the 100-mile journey in three days
A supporter of the campaign for the South Downs to be made a national park is cycling the 100 mile-long South Downs Way to promote the campaign.

Alan Hilliar will cycle from Eastbourne in East Sussex to Winchester in Hampshire between Saturday and Monday.

He will celebrate his 55th birthday while making the mountain bike journey.

Mr Hilliar said: "I believe the South Downs are among the most beautiful and tranquil parts of this increasingly crowded corner of England."

Public inquiry

He set off from Eastbourne at 0800 BST on Saturday and plans to reach Winchester at about 1530 BST on Monday.

He said he wanted to see the downs "conserved and enhanced for our children's children to enjoy".

Campaigners have been calling for the South Downs to be made a national park for several years.

A 13-month public inquiry into whether it should get the status closed last December, with 5,800 representations being made to a government planning inspector.

The government is due to give a verdict based on the report.
