The slam-door trains have to be taken out of service by November

The trains have run in the South East for decades but have gradually been phased out over the past few years by new trains with electric doors.

The franchise's final service with the slam-door carriages is due to be the 1717 BST from London Victoria to Seaford and Eastbourne.

Southern Railways said it would keep some for emergency cover until November - the deadline for their removal.

The firm runs trains through much of Sussex and Surrey and commuter services into London from those areas.

South West Trains ran its last slam-door service in May, and with Southern taking them out of service, only South Eastern Trains will still have any running.

South Eastern Trains plans to stop using the old rolling stock in early September.

The Mark One trains were due to be taken out of service by the end of 2004, but the deadline was extended.

The train companies originally agreed to withdraw them in 1999 because of concerns over the doors and lack of protection during a crash.
