Village ruled out for incinerator
Work at Pebsham site
East Sussex Council voted to expand the landfill site at Pebsham
A village in East Sussex has been ruled out as a location for a waste incinerator for household rubbish.

East Sussex County Council decided on Tuesday that the site in Mountfield, near Battle, should no longer be included in its local waste plan.

It says a landfill site at Pebsham should be expanded as an alternative, by opening a recycling facility.

The decision follows a lengthy public inquiry into East Sussex's waste and recycling plans last year.

National problem

The government inspector recommended that Mountfield be dropped from the plans.

He also said that Pebsham should be used for composting and mechanical and biological treatment of waste, which the council rejected.

The inspector recommended a site at North Quay, Newhaven for an incinerator.

East Sussex says the local waste plan is its response to a national problem which means that enough waste is produced every hour to fill the Albert Hall.

The public will be consulted on the latest draft of the plan in February 2005.
