1,500 runners are taking part in the Beachy Head marathon |
Runners, joggers and walkers are pounding a 26-mile route across the South Downs on Saturday in the 24th Beachy Head marathon. About 1,500 people are taking part in the annual event, which promises one of the most challenging and picturesque routes in Britain.
Starting and ending in Eastbourne, it takes in Cuckmere Haven, the Seven Sisters and the Long Man of Wilmington.
Entrants this year include runners from as far afield as the USA and Canada.
Unique event
First across the finish line for the last two years has been university lecturer Stuart Mills.
Originally from New Zealand, but now working in Eastbourne, the veteran runner completed the route last year in three hours and seven minutes.
The event is organised by Eastbourne Borough Council.
Tourism spokesman councillor David Elkin described it as a great sporting event for the East Sussex town, which is unique in its endurance and beauty.
Spectators can enjoy the marathon and scenery at Bo Peep Hill, Birling Gap and Beachy Head, as well as at the start and finish line in Eastbourne.
