Radar guns target river speeders
Boat (generic)
Boats on the River Arun must not go faster than six-and-a-half knots
Radar guns are being used to catch speeding boats on a river in West Sussex this weekend.

Environment Agency patrols are ensuring that the River Arun remains safe for everyone by reminding boat handlers that there is a speed limit.

Under the Land Drainage and Sea Defence bylaws, it is an offence to travel in excess of the given speed.

The speed varies on the River Arun between five-and-a-half knots and six-and-a-half knots and is signposted.

Sussex Area Flood Defence Manager, Andrew Gilham, warned that speeding boats could cause "significant harm" to other boat users, fishermen and wildlife.

"The wash created by speeding craft can cause significant erosion damage to the tidal defences, which protect the lower Arun Valley from major flooding," he said.
