Shored-up pub open for business
Olde Smugglers Inne
The walls of the historic pub had to be shored up
A 14th century pub which faced possible demolition after being hit by a car has reopened for business.

The walls of Ye Olde Smugglers Inne, in Alfriston, East Sussex, were shored up after the accident on 14 July.

The Grade II listed building, which had once been used as a base by a gang of smugglers, was severely damaged and the High Street was closed after the crash.

Landlady Maureen Scott and her husband Robert Scott were asleep at the time of the collision in the early hours.

They had feared that the pub - the only one in the village - would have to be closed for a minimum of three months.

Built in 1358, the pub has a maze of underground tunnels and a secret passage, with hidden recesses behind an open chimney and a hiding place in the roof.
