Four "outcrops" will jut out along Brighton's Madeira Drive

Brighton's Madeira Drive has been the scene of several accidents, some of which have resulted in death and serious injuries.

Now the local council is building four "outcrops" that jut into the road, forcing drivers to slow down.

Councillor Gill Mitchell said: "Racing is hazardous for both the people taking part and other road users."

Brighton and Hove City Council said the traffic calming measures would be positioned between Duke's Mound and the Colonnade shops.

Ms Mitchell, who is chair of the community safety forum, described it as a "proactive measure to stop the highly dangerous practice of racing" along Madeira Drive.

In previous efforts to try to halt the boy racers, the council has shut the road on an ad hoc basis for 12 hours at a time, while in June it was closed every Friday and Saturday night.
