Conference city praised by police
Sussex Police Chief Constable Ken Jones
Ken Jones praised security at the Labour Party conference
The Chief Constable of Sussex has praised the people of Brighton and Hove for their patience during the Labour Party Conference this week.

"They have been incredible," said Ken Jones, whose officers were in charge of the 2.375m security operation.

"With the council and businesses of the city we have all worked hard to minimise the delays they suffered."

"We have also combined to contain the risks posed by international terrorism which are still with us post 9/11."

'Breach of trust'

More than 1,000 police and support staff were involved in Operation Otter to safeguard the conference at The Brighton Centre.

Mr Jones said there were no breaches of counter terrorism security, but trust was breached by "a handful of people" who disrupted Prime Minister Tony Blair's speech on Tuesday.

Anti-war and pro-hunt protesters were able to get into the conference after obtaining official passes.

"They had supplied their correct names, addresses and other details but were dishonest with respect to their political leanings," said Mr Jones.

The Chief Constable also thanked the 14,000 organisers, stewards and protesters who took part in five peaceful demonstrations during the week.

"I wish to pay tribute to all the officers and staff involved in the planning and during the week itself for ensuring the safety of the conference and the people of Brighton and Hove," he said.

Mr Blair paid tribute earlier in the week to staff working on Operation Otter.

"Given all the pressures you really have done a fantastic job," he said.
