Traffic control website for city

Drivers will be able to find out the most congested areas of the city
A new website which gives public information on roads, buses and parking spaces in the Sussex city of Brighton is being launched on Tuesday.

Citytransport.org.uk will show users real time information about the city's car parks, and also allow them to check the state of traffic congestion.

The site will also give information on roadworks, road closures and incidents that affect the city's major routes.

It will also be possible to find out when a bus is due from any bus stop.

Library access

The website shows which roads are flowing freely, and which are getting clogged up.

Roads lit up in green are flowing normally, while amber means that traffic is building up. Red signifies congestion.

Motorists can also find out how many spaces there are in each car park, and how many there will be in half an hour or an hour's time.

Brighton and Hove City Council's environment and transport spokesman, Craig Turton, said the information would be useful "no matter what kind of transport you use to get around".

'Frustration'

For those without a computer, the site is available through computers at every public library in Brighton and Hove, where internet access is free.

"It deals with the frustration of suddenly fetching up in a traffic jam, or finding the car park is full, and giving that power back to the person who wants to travel," said Mr Turton.

The cost of the 70,000 project was funded through Brighton and Hove's Local Transport Plan.

As well as real-time information, the website provides weather forecasts, and information on cycling, events and other local public transport.
