Jane Longhurst

The man found guilty of murdering the special needs teacher Jane Longhurst to satisfy a sexual fantasy has lodged an appeal against his conviction.

Graham Coutts, of Waterloo Street, Hove, was convicted and jailed for at least 30 years for the Brighton teacher's macabre murder last month.

A Lewes Crown Court jury unanimously agreed he had strangled Miss Longhurst to satisfy an asphyxiation fantasy.

His solicitor has confirmed an appeal against the ruling has been lodged.

Miss Longhurst's family and boyfriend Malcolm Sentance have been warned there is a possibility the case could be brought before appeal judges.

The jury returned a unanimous guilty verdict at Coutts's trial

They attended the original trial and heard how the 35-year-old guitarist took Miss Longhurst to his Brighton flat and strangled her with a pair of tights in March last year.

They also heard details of his sexual fantasies and how he stored her body for 35 days before burning the corpse in woodland near Pulborough, West Sussex.

Interviews with Miss Longhurst's family about the murder, can be seen on Tuesday night in a BBC documentary examining the story behind his conviction.

Beyond Murder: Convicting Jane's Killer features new interviews with her family, lawyers and detectives.

It also shows new video footage of the Brighton teacher, and examines the motives behind her killer's actions.
