The result of the public inquiry is due to be announced in the autumn

It is the latest move by fans who want the new stadium built at Falmer.

It follows a local planning inspector's report which advised the city council not to back the scheme.

Paul Samrah, from the Falmer for All Campaign, said: "We are overwhelmed at the support we have received."

The football club, which currently plays at Withdean Stadium, which is an athletics stadium, wants to build the 22,000 seater stadium at land near the South Downs.

Fans staged a 20-minute sit-in at Brighton's away game at Wycombe Wanderers on Saturday in protest at the inspector saying building the ground was not of national importance.

Now supporters have decided to bombard John Prescott with bunches of flowers.

One fan Simon Sebbage, said: "We want this stadium built as soon as possible.

"We thought it is Valentine's Day very soon and "say it with flowers" is a unique way of getting our message through."

Brighton and Hove Albion has asked all 91 premier and nationwide league clubs to support its campaign.

The club has been without a ground since the Goldstone Ground was sold off for redevelopment in 1997.

Many residents in Falmer are opposed to the stadium plans because it is near the South Downs and an area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
