Councillors tackle seafront gridlock by introducing charges |
Free parking in Eastbourne could soon be a thing of the past with plans to transfer responsibility for issuing fines from the police to the county council. There is currently no charge for motorists who park along the seafront or in the town centre.
Proposals set out by the council would introduce charges, along with resident-only parking schemes.
Supporters say the plan will free up spaces for people who live in the town but opponents fear that disgruntled motorists will take their business elsewhere.
Businesses say any change would affect large numbers of people.

Hotelier Matthew Williamson said: "It's got all sorts of implications for residents, hotel guests, employees and conference delegates - everybody who has to come on to the seafront.
"Then there's the confusion about which bays are pay bays, which ones are voucher bays, which ones are pay and display bays."
East Sussex councillor Tony Reid, cabinet member for transport and the environment, said: "People never want to pay for parking, but the present situation is far from ideal and everyone must ask themselves if they want this to continue.
"We really do want to know what people think. All serious views will count."
Consultation on parking proposals set out by the county council is under way and public exhibitions are being held during October.
A decision is expected early in 2004 and any changes would be implemented by spring 2005.
