Police warn of 'goped' menace
Mopeds
Goped riders must follow the same rules as people using mopeds
People are causing a nuisance and risking their safety by riding motorised skateboards on the roads, police have said.

The gopeds - also known as citybugs and buzz-boards - are sold as unsuitable for use on public streets.

But Surrey Police say they have received a series of complaints about people ignoring the rules to ride on the roads.

Pc Pat Webber, of Surrey Police, said goped use was a particular problem in Sandy Hill, Farnham.

'Breaking the law'

"We have had a number of complaints from members of the public in and around the area reporting persons of all ages using gopeds in the streets," she said.

"Many of the youths using these gopeds are not only causing a nuisance and risking their safety and the safety of others, but they are also breaking the law.

"The DVLA has classed gopeds in the same category as mopeds - meaning everyone using them must comply with the exact same legislation and conditions as moped riders."

Before a goped can be used on the roads it must be registered with the DVLA as a moped, under the Road Traffic Act 1988.

Riders must be over 16, hold a relevant driving licence and wear a crash helmet, and the goped should be taxed, insured and hold an MOT certificate if it is more then three years old.
