Concert for murdered teacher
Jane Longhurst
Jane Longhurst was a keen musician as well as a music teacher
A concert in memory of murdered schoolteacher Jane Longhurst will take place on Thursday evening.

It is hoped enough money will be raised in donations at the event to fund a permanent memorial to Miss Longhurst.

The 31-year-old teacher went missing from her Brighton home in March and was found dead five weeks later in nearby Pulborough.

A man has been charged with her murder and is due in court again in August.

Miss Longhurst was a music teacher at Uplands Special Needs School in Brighton.

She disappeared from the home she shared with her long-term partner Malcolm Sentance on 14 March, sparking a massive police search for her.

But she was found dead at an Royal Society for the Protection of Birds sanctuary in Pulborough, West Sussex, on 19 April.

A post mortem examination showed she had been strangled.

Family, friends, colleagues, past and present pupils and fellow musicians all attended her funeral at St Peter's Church in Brighton on 10 June.

The concert on Thursday night will be held at Oakmeeds Community College in Burgess Hill, a school she had taught at in the past, and will feature music, drama and dance.

People applying to attend the concert have not been charged for tickets but the organisers at the college hope enough will be raised in donations to pay for a memorial for Miss Longhurst.

Graham Coutts, a 35-year-old musician and sales rep from Waterloo Street in Hove, has been charged with her murder.

He is due to appear before Lewes Crown Court on 1 August, for a plea and directions hearing.
