Police in Sussex are using similar technology used for the congestion charging scheme to catch criminals on the road. Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) vans are being used to spot burglars and car criminals.
In Horsham, the van was taken out supported by a number of police units which led to 13 roadside arrests being made.
The team attended locations at Broadbridge Heath, the Toat area of the A29, Pease Pottage, Upper Beeding and the Buck Barn crossroads on the A24.
"Our ultimate aim is to deprive criminals from the use of the road. |
The ANPR van is able to read number plates and is similar to equipment used to enforce the congestion charge in London.
It scans number plates and automatically checks them against information stored on databases including the Police National Computer.
Sergeant Steve Black said: "We arrested people for a variety of offences.
"We also seized three vehicles, one of which was stolen two days before.
"These were wanted people as well as people who were driving while disqualified.
"Our ultimate aim is to deprive criminals from the use of the road."
