Nominations open for next mayor

Mayor Martin Winter
Mr Winter was first elected as mayor in 2002 and re-elected in 2005

Nominations have opened for candidates for the next mayor of Doncaster.

The current mayor, Martin Winter, said in March he would not seek re-election after a review labelled the town's childcare services "seriously weak".

Doncaster Council is one of 12 nationally to be run by an elected mayor. Mr Winter became the first elected mayor of the town in 2002.

Official nominations from candidates will be accepted until 1600 BST on 7 May. The election is on 4 June.

The government ordered a takeover of Doncaster children's services after the review's findings were published last month.

Mr Winter said he had taken the decision not to seek re-election to "take the heat out" of the situation.
