Fans were crushed at the Leppings Lane end of the Hillsborough stadium |
Officials at Sheffield Wednesday have said there will be no ceremony at its ground to mark the 20th anniversary of the Hillsborough tragedy. Ninety-six football fans were killed at the Leppings Lane end of the ground on 15 April 1989 at an FA Cup tie between Liverpool and Nottingham Forest. The South Yorkshire club has contacted both Liverpool Football Club and the Hillsborough Family Support Group. Both organisations want the ceremony at Liverpool's Anfield ground. Although there will be no official ceremony, the Sheffield club said those wanting to pay their respects to the victims will be given access to the memorial on Parkside Road and to the Leppings Lane stand at the Hillsborough Stadium. Supporters attending Sheffield Wednesday's match against Southampton on 18 April will be asked to observe one minute's silence.
