Blades' Kop plans at cutting edge

The club plan to increase the capacity of the Kop.

Sheffield United football club has revealed plans to develop the Bramall Lane stadium and increase the Kop's capacity by more than 3,000 seats.

A planning application is set to go before the city's council outlining the upgrading of the Kop and further development of the south stand.

Officials at the Championship club want to increase the ground's capacity firstly to 36,000 and then 40,000.

The club wants to host matches if England's 2018 World Cup bid succeeds.

The club said it wanted to build a student accommodation block on the corner of John Street and Shoreham Street as part of the Kop project.

Further residential development and car parking is envisaged when the South Stand scheme gets under way.

Club chief executive Jason Rockett said: "Over recent years we have upgraded supporters' facilities, have increased the capacity to just under 33,000 and seen the club become the best supported in the Championship.

"We continue to plan for the medium to long-term, putting in place the infrastructure to support a growing fan base and with an intention of achieving our main objective, promotion and sustained Premier League Football.

"We have also taken a longer term view and identified the opportunities around the South Stand which would enable Sheffield and Bramall Lane to be a part of any 2018 bid."

The club is planning to exhibit the plans at the ground from Monday, 6 October until the following Saturday.
