Women workers to share 4m payout
Cleaners
Council cleaners are among the 4,000 women to benefit
Almost 4,000 women workers at Doncaster Council are to share in a 4m windfall as part of a national deal to rectify pay inequalities.

The employees - mainly cleaners, home carers, domestic staff and cooks - will each receive lump sums ranging from just a few pounds to 12,250.

It follows talks between unions and the council. Staff voted overwhelmingly to accept the council's offer.

Workers will receive their cheques by the end of April, the council said.

Funds to cover the payouts were set aside by the council when the review process began last summer.

The council said the deal was a significant move forward in achieving gender equality in the workplace, particularly in light of the recent Women and Work Commission Report which identified that women were still being paid less than their male counterparts.

Doncaster Council's managing director, Susan Law, said: "The agreement represents a big step forward and proves our commitment to equality in the workplace.

"We will now build a modern pay structure that provides equitable pay for everyone, values frontline workers and attracts and keeps hold of staff."
