Goalie legend enters hall of fame
Gordon Banks
Gordon Banks was awarded an OBE for his footballing achievements
World Cup-winning England goalkeeper Gordon Banks has become the first Sheffield legend to be inducted into the city's 'hall of fame'.

Mr Banks, who grew up in Tinsley, was the nation's goalkeeper for 10 years and part of the World Cup side in 1966.

He is one of nine Sheffield heroes to have been nominated by the public to be included in the city's answer to the Hollywood walk of fame.

Mr Banks unveiled his bronze plaque in front of the town hall on Tuesday.

"To be the first to be nominated for this really is incredible," he said. "This really is a very, very big honour for me."

During his footballing career, Banks earned 73 international caps and saw England lose just seven of the 73 matches when he was in goal.

He truly deserves his place as a Sheffield Legend

After his success at the World Cup in 1966, he went on to join Stoke City in 1967 and helped the club to clinch their first trophy win with the League Cup against Chelsea in 1972 before going on to be named Footballer of the Year.

But his professional career was cut short months later when he was involved in a road accident in which he lost the sight in his right eye.

Leader of Sheffield Council, Councillor Jan Wilson, said: "I am delighted that Gordon will be the first legend to be inducted into the hall of fame.

"It is particularly appropriate that it should take place in this 40th anniversary year of England winning the World Cup and, as one of the all-time great goalkeepers, he truly deserves his place as a Sheffield Legend."

The other Sheffield legends to be honoured in the hall of fame include: actor Sean Bean, lead singer of Pulp, Jarvis Cocker, Britain's first astronaut Helen Sharman, and former Olympian and chairman of the British bid for the 2012 Olympics, Lord Sebastian Coe.
