Doncaster's Town Moor racecourse will be redeveloped |
The home of the world's oldest classic horse race, the St Leger, is to undergo a major redevelopment after Doncaster Council signed a 55m deal. The town's council signed an agreement with developer Arena Leisure which will see a conference and exhibition centre and a 200-bed hotel built at the site.
Along with new stands there will be new accommodation for stable workers and a host of improvements to the course.
A management company will run the racecourse and oversee developments.
The first phase of the redevelopment will include the refurbishment of the existing St Leger and Clock stands.
During the second phase the four-star hotel will be built.
"This will put Doncaster on the international tourist and convention map and is another step in Doncaster's transformation into a leading European city," said the mayor, Martin Winter.
"This agreement guarantees the world's oldest classic race, the St Leger, a home that will reflect its prestige as a top national sporting event.
"The new facilities will also give the local economy a boost in terms of tourism and convention income and through the creation of hundreds of jobs for Doncaster people.
"In less than two years our businesses will be prospering from a significant rise in visitors to the borough."
