The price of crack cocaine is said to have halved in Sheffield since 2004 |
Heroin and cocaine is cheaper to buy in Sheffield than anywhere else in the UK, according to new research. A survey of drug prices in 15 towns and cities found heroin could be bought for as little as 25 per gram compared to the national average of 49 per gram.
The results, published by the charity Drugscope, also found cocaine available for 30 per gram - 12 per gram less than the national average.
But the cost of cannabis has increased to become the most expensive in the UK.
The survey was carried out in July by Druglink magazine to get an overview of current prices and help police and drugs workers recognise new trends.
Druglink editor Harry Shapiro said national prices had remained fairly stable since 2004 but regional variations were significant.
"Sheffield has emerged as something of a drugs hub with cut price heroin and cocaine and some of the cheapest crack in the country, while at the same time having a relatively expensive market in cannabis."
