Police said there were around 300 protestors in the city |
Police in riot gear have been involved in disturbances with protesters in Sheffield who were demonstrating near a meeting of G8 justice ministers. South Yorkshire Police said the "minor disturbances" were caused by people who had not been part of an agreed protest.
Around 300 protesters were in the city, including 150 who had been allowed to protest in Tudor Square, near a civic reception for ministers, police said.
Three people were arrested for minor public order offences.
March refused
One police officer broke her hand as the demonstrators tried to access a secure area near the reception from Fargate.
But despite the trouble a spokesman for South Yorkshire Police said they were pleased with the way the first day of the summit had gone.
"The protesters have been given a chance to protest and any disturbances were minor and over in a few minutes," he said.
Justice ministers from some of the world's most powerful countries will discuss topics including terrorism and organised crime during the three days of talks.
Anti-G8 campaigners had asked permission to march through the city centre to coincide with the ministers' arrival but this was refused.
Instead about 150 people were allowed to gather in Tudor Square near the Winter Garden where the reception was held.
