Councils prepare for cold weather
Gritters
Gritters will be out in force in the event of cold weather
Councils in South Yorkshire are vowing not to be beaten by the cold weather this winter.

In Sheffield, contractors will standby to supplement the council's gritting vehicles to minimise disruption caused by snow and ice on the roads.

Doncaster Council has stockpiled more than 3,000 tonnes of salt and says it can treat 338 miles of road within three-and-a-half hours of a forecast.

Mayor Martin Winter said keeping the borough moving was a "high priority".

"Most people agree that the busiest roads and footways should be first to be tackled when the weather turns and we will strive to make sure that we are keeping the Borough safe," he added.

Both councils say its main routes will be given priority in the event of a cold snap, followed by secondary roads.

Two salt depots have been set up on the outskirts of Sheffield in addition to the central store at Olive Grove.
