An army barracks in Rotherham is to be named in honour of a soldier who died while protecting his colleagues. Sergeant Ian McKay, of Rotherham, was killed in the Falklands while trying to save his colleagues from enemy fire.
He was awarded a posthumous Victoria Cross for his courage and leadership in the attack in 1982.
The newly-named Mackay VC Barracks in Fitzwilliam Road will be dedicated by Sgt McKay's mother Freda at a parade on 22 June.
Sgt McKay and his men from the Third Battalion Parachute Regiment were ordered to attack an Argentine bunker on Mount Longdon during the conflict.
They met fierce resistance, but Sgt McKay managed to reach the bunker and threw in two grenades before being killed. His actions saved his colleagues.
The Victoria Cross is the highest award for gallantry that can be awarded to British and Commonwealth forces. It is given only for great acts of bravery in times of extreme danger.
