A poet from Barnsley is up for a top appointment at Oxford University. Ian McMillan is one of five candidates in the election for Professor of Poetry, a post which is held for five years and was established in 1708.
Mr McMillan is poet-in-residence at Barnsley Football Club and appears regularly on radio and television.
All Oxford graduates can vote in person in the election on 15 May. Previous holders include WH Auden, Matthew Arnold and Cecil Day-Lewis.
If elected, Mr McMillan would give a public lecture each term, set the theme for, and judge, university prizes as well as encouraging poetry in the university.
The other candidates are Anne Carson, Peter Porter, Christopher Ricks and Mark Walker.
