This is the second plan for a casino in Sheffield
Sheffield United has signed a deal to develop a Las Vegas style entertainment complex at Bramall Lane.

The scheme includes a casino, hotel, retail shops, leisure facilities and underground car park to be built behind the Laver Stand.

The club is working in partnership with an American company, Las Vegas Sands Inc. The development depends on planning approvals and a change of the British gaming laws.

In what is claimed to be one of the biggest regeneration projects in Sheffield, the club will redevelop substantial areas of the ground in a joint venture with the US leisure firm.

The Sheffield United chairman Kevin McCabe said: "With the support of the local community and a political will in Sheffield, I firmly believe this project could underpin not only the future of an historic football club, but also deliver real wealth and prosperity to Sharrow and the Sheaf Valley."

The project's backers believe the development would create around 2,000 jobs.

Bill Weiner, the president of Las Vegas Sands Inc, said: "Most of the casinos in the UK seem to be dedicated purely gambling places, we develop places that are fun places to be that happen to have casinos in it."

The Bramall Lane venture is the second proposal of its kind for the city.

In February, the Las Vegas-based hotel and gaming company MGM Mirage announced they want to build a leisure resort next to Meadowhall.
