Mr Canby was shooting on Strines Moor when he was stung |
A country estate manager died within 25 minutes of being stung by wasps while out shooting, an inquest heard on Tuesday. Guy Canby, 53, was stung 22 times on his legs at the end of a day's grouse shoot on Strines Moor in South Yorkshire in August this year.
Two doctors out walking tried to resuscitate Mr Canby for 15 minutes but he died before an ambulance arrived and was pronounced dead at Sheffield's Northern General Hospital.
Pathologist Dr Philip Lumb told the Sheffield hearing Mr Canby's death was caused by systemic anaphylactic shock.
Slumped in car
His family were unaware he was allergic to wasp stings.
The father-of-three, who ran the 17,000-acre Fitzwilliam Estate, based at Wentworth, near Rotherham, felt unwell shortly after being stung and was driven to the nearby Strines pub where an ambulance was called.
Mrs Canby told the hearing: "Within a few moments he went into the car and I found him slumped in the driver's seat. "He was not responding to my voice and appeared to be unconscious. We realised there was something seriously wrong."
Microbiologist Dr James Clayton and another doctor who were outside the pub tried to revive the estate manager.
Dr Clayton said he found a pulse but Mr Canby then stopped breathing and he and his friend unsuccessfully tried resuscitation for 15 minutes.
Recording a verdict of misadventure South Yorkshire coroner Christopher Dorries said: "Something happened to Mr Canby which would not have been expected."
