Faced with a threat to withdraw two services along Hucklow Road, in Shiregreen, Sheffield, and even possible legal action, planners have recommended the removal of all but two of the bumps.

A number of drivers had claimed the traffic calming bumps were too high and the jolt caused by repeatedly driving over them was leaving them with back pain.

But more than 12 months after the dispute surfaced, managers from First Bus and Sheffield City Council have agreed upon a new speed reduction scheme to replace the troublesome obstacles.

Brandon Jones, of First Bus, told BBC New Online: "We are pleased that the council has taken our views seriously.

We have had complaints from taxi drivers in the past but this is the first time we have had bus drivers complaining so much Council spokesman

"Our biggest concern was the ongoing safety of our drivers."

He added that the threat to withdraw services along the route was "always the last resort".

A council spokesman said the new traffic calming measures, which will include a narrowing of the road, are expected to be ratified at a planning meeting on 17 November.

He added: "We have had complaints from taxi drivers in the past but this is the first time we have had bus drivers complaining so much.

"There was obviously an urgent need to do something about road safety on that route.
