Mayor launches litter offensive

Littering now carries a 50 on the spot fine in Doncaster
People who drop litter in Doncaster are being warned they face a 50 spot fine.

A dozen litter wardens began patrolling the streets of the town on Tuesday as part of Mayor Martin Winter's Flag (fighting litter, abandoned cars and graffiti) campaign.

Anyone caught dropping litter will be issued a "parking style" ticket and fine, while non-payment could end in a court appearance.

The fixed penalty notices can be issued for dropping anything from sandwich wrappings to cigarette ends.

The South Yorkshire police force is supporting the campaign and its officers will be on hand to assist the wardens on patrol.

Mr Winter said the introduction of the wardens underlined the fact littering would "no longer be tolerated" in the borough.

"It is no longer a good enough excuse to needlessly discard rubbish in the streets when there are rubbish bins to use.

He added: "We must all make a stand against this modern menace."
