A 17-year-old has died in hospital after he lost consciousness while swimming in a canal lock. Mark Attwood was one of about eight youngsters swimming in Aldwarke Lock, just off the River Don, in the Parkgate area of Rotherham on Tuesday.
Police divers had been called at about 1245 BST after reports someone was unconscious in the water.
A member of the police underwater search team pulled the boy from the canal.
'Tragic accident'
The teenager, who was from the East Dene area of Rotherham, died later at Rotherham General Hospital.
A police spokeswoman said a post-mortem examination showed that Mark died from drowning.
She added: "Police have interviewed several witnesses to the incident which they now believe was a tragic accident."
His family said in a statement: "This was a tragic accident, the whole family are deeply distressed.
"Mark was a loveable rogue."
They also appealed to others not to go near the canal lock where he drowned.
