A �300m power plant planned for a South Yorkshire town has been given the go-ahead from the government. Stephen Timms, the Energy Minister, has approved the application to build the plant on the site of the former Hatfield Colliery.
Residents were concerned about the amount of extra traffic travelling through the town.
But supporters of the scheme say it will generate power for thousands of homes in the Stainforth area.
The company behind the project, Coalpower Limited, believes around 150 jobs will be created and have plans to develop a business park.
It has said it now hopes to secure the �300m needed to build the plant which could be up and running by 2006.
The proposals for the 430 megawatt plant had been referred to the government after planning permission was granted by Doncaster Council.
