The Green will combine turf with works of art |
Plans have been announced to turn part of the centre of Doncaster into a temporary village green. For three days starting on Friday 3 October, turf made from seed-impregnated cloth will be put down in Scot Lane by landscape architects Whitelaw Turkington.
A series of newly-created works of art will also be installed.
Called The Green, the project is part of the Yorkshire Festival of Places, a regional urban renaissance programme partly funded by Yorkshire Forward and the Arts Council of England.
'Fun festival'
Councillor John Hoare, Doncaster's cabinet member for economic development, said: "The aim of The Green is to stimulate everyone to think creatively about the way we use public space."
Councillor Hoare says the weekend will be a "real festival of fun" with events and entertainment.
Doncaster has been selected as one of five Yorkshire towns to host The Green which will later visit Bridlington, Huddersfield, Halifax and Wakefield.
But reservations about the scheme have been expressed by some market traders in Doncaster.
They say closing Scot Lane will mean traffic will be diverted past their stalls and through pedestrian areas.
