Prison wing 'one of country's worst'

Lindholme holds category C prisoners
Bullying and drug taking are a serious problem in parts of Lindholme prison near Doncaster, according to official inspectors.

A report by HM Chief Inspector of Prisons, Anne Owers, says the jail's H-wing "was among the worst we have visited recently".

The report states that while there is excellent work going on elsewhere at Lindholme, bullying was rife on H-wing.

Drugs and alcohol are said to be in common use and during the inspectors' visit in March there was a serious disturbance which destroyed an entire wing section.

Elsewhere in the report though, there is praise for a range of improvements made since the previous inspection.

Ms Owers said: "The first and most important conclusion that the inspectors drew of the greater part of Lindholme is that it is safe and respectful.

"Once necessary and urgent action in H-wing has been taken, Lindholme can become a first rate training prison."

Lindholme holds category C prisoners, including those serving life sentences.

It includes a 112 bed immigration centre.
