Actor Brian Blessed has received an honorary doctorate from the University of Bradford. The son of a South Yorkshire coal miner, Mr Blessed was born in the South Yorkshire town of Mexborough and grew up in Goldthorpe.
He trained at the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School and has since had a distinguished acting career.
The university gave him the doctorate for his contribution to the world of acting.
Mountain expedition
His credits include I Claudius, Z Cars, and Blackadder on television, Hamlet and Henry V on stage, and Star Wars on film.
Mr Blessed has also worked with some of the country's leading orchestras, as well as undertaking three expeditions to Mount Everest and a trek to the North Pole.
Also receiving awards from the university were leading figures from the world of science, media, and business.
They include Susan Scott-Parker, Emeritus Professor Duncan Dowson, Sir Nicholas Montagu, Isabel Hilton, Professor Trevor Jones, and Tim Smit.
Professor Chris Taylor, vice chancellor, said: "We are pleased to be able to recognise the achievements of such talented and distinguished individuals."
