Hillsborough MP Helen Jackson addressed the Commons |
A Sheffield MP has called for steel giant Corus to rethink its plans to cut 700 jobs in South Yorkshire.
The company says worldwide competition and over-capacity are to blame for the cut backs.
In the latest round of job cuts the Rotherham and Stocksbridge plants bear the brunt with 358 and 355 respectively.
Speaking in the House of Commons, Hillsborough MP Helen Jackson said the Corus management had made a mistake.
She said: "It is actually a fix and a crisis response to Corus' serious financing problem rather than a thoughtfully thought through industrial strategy."
The announcement means the end of steel production in Stocksbridge, which will remain open for finishing work only.
