Council 'honoured' by Queen's visit
Sheffield Winter Garden
The Winter Garden will be officially opened by the Queen

The Queen's decision to visit Sheffield is a "great honour" for the city, a council spokesman said.

Her Majesty will visit the city on Thursday 22 May to officially open the Winter Garden, the centrepiece of a 120m regeneration project.

She will be accompanied by the Duke of Edinburgh on the tour, which will also see the royal party open Fir Vale School.

City Council chief executive Bob Kerslake said: "This Royal visit is a great honour for the city of Sheffield and a cause for celebration.

"It pays tribute to our success in raising educational standards and to the ongoing regeneration of the city centre.

Mr Kerslake said he was confident the royal visitors will be impressed by the garden, which is seen as a symbol of the new look city centre.

"I am certain that people from across the city will want to join me in offering a very warm Sheffield welcome on the day of the visit," he added.
