The Winter Garden houses more than 2,500 plants |
The Winter Garden in Sheffield has won its second national award since opening its doors six months ago. The city centre showcase of exotic plants has been given the Royal Fine Art Commission's Jeu d'esprit Building of the Year award.
Designed by architects Pringle, Richards, Sharratt (PRS), the Winter Garden is the largest glasshouse in any European city centre and contains more than 2,500 plants from around the world.
It forms part of Sheffield's 'Heart of the City' project - a 120 million scheme bringing together the Winter Garden, Peace Gardens and Millennium Galleries with covered walkways.
Gill Furniss of Sheffield City Council said: "The Winter Garden has quickly established itself as the crowning jewel in Sheffield city centre, with its wonderful arches creating a spectacle across Sheffield's horizon.
"We welcome this award as a prestigious reflection of the already highly acclaimed regeneration underway in our city."
During the Queen's visit to Sheffield last month she officially opened the Winter Garden.
Also in May, the attraction won the Variety Club of Great Britain Best Regeneration Award.
