Somerset honours fast bowler Joel Garner

One of Somerset's greatest players has returned to the County Ground in Taunton to see gates at the Riverside entrance named after him.

The West Indian fast bowler Joel Garner played a key role in the club's success about 30 years ago.

Garner, who at 6ft 8ins was nicknamed Big Bird, was a contemporary of Viv Richards and Ian Botham who brought a flurry of one-day trophies to Taunton.

Richards already has a set of gates named after him at the ground.

Garner's time at Somerset ended in a sad note in the mid-80s when he and Richards were told their services were no longer required - a decision which also led to Ian Botham leaving.
