Some players are concerned sun cream can be washed off by sweat. |
Players from Somerset County Cricket Club have been reminded by a dermatologist of the dangers of too much sunshine on their skin. The incidence of skin cancer has doubled over the past 10 years and Dr Vicki Lewis said anyone who has sun exposure should be aware of the risks. "They think they are looking after their bodies but are putting themselves at risk of skin cancer," she said. Director of cricket, Brian Rose said he had had a couple of scares. He is fully behind the screening programme. "I've had little bouts of skin cancer on my face and back and one or two on the leg - nothing serious yet thankfully. "It does make you aware how lucky you are sometimes. Player Peter Trego who was among those checked out said team members spent eight to 10 hours a day out in the sun - potentially for 12 months in a year. "Sometimes the sunscreen can sweat itself off and as we are out there in the sun unprotected a lot of time so it's good to be checked out," he added.
