The circular route crosses the border into Devon and back into Somerset |
A 60-mile circular cycle route has been launched on Exmoor in Somerset as part of the Tour of Britain 2008 media ride. The Tour of Britain, which passed through Exmoor in 2007, attracted around 30,000 spectators. Minehead is the best place to start and finish as it has the best public transport links with the West Somerset Railway and bus services from Taunton. Experienced riders can do the route in one day or it can be divided into sections for those who want to tour. 'Excellent cycling' Rachel Hayes, project manager for the route, said: "The spin off effects from the Tour of Britain in 2007 can still be seen throughout Exmoor, the area is becoming renowned amongst the cycling fraternity for its excellent cycling terrain and quiet roads". John Dyke, of the Exmoor Park Authority, said: " I am sure that the new route will encourage more and more cyclists to experience at first hand the challenges and keep-fit opportunities which exist here." The Tour of Britain 2008 expects to be passing through Exmoor on 9 September.
