Town 'at high risk of flooding'

A Somerset town has been classed as a "critical flood risk area" by the Environment Agency following a major downpour last month.

Flash flooding hit Shepton Mallet and a large area of south Somerset, including Crewkerne and Castle Cary, on 29 May.

But following emergency meetings with residents, the agency said flood defence works could cost more than 1m.

Somerset County Council said work to alleviate the problem was already being carried out.

Last month's deluge was the second time in 18 months that residents in Shepton Mallet were flooded.
