Special needs units are to close
Somerset County Council has voted to close a number of special education needs units in schools.

The units in Taunton, Minehead and Wiveliscombe, will close when funding stops in 2008.

A spokesman for the council said that rural areas had received extra funding over the past 30 years which other schools had not been given.

He added that the closures would mean the affected children would be moved to mainstream classes at the same schools.

Some parents had launched a vocal campaign against the cuts.
