Protected peregrine falcon shot
X-ray of peregrine, image from RSPCA
The falcon had been shot in the wing
A protected bird of prey has been found badly wounded after being shot at.

The peregrine falcon was discovered tangled in a hedge in Fosgrave Lane, Taunton, on 24 November by a passer-by who took her to an RSPCA centre.

An x-ray of the young female bird revealed she had shotgun pellets in her wing and needed ongoing treatment.

RSPCA inspector Pete Barton said the bird was "incredibly lucky". "She was growing very weak and would eventually have died from her injuries," she said.

The peregrine is afforded the highest degree of legal protection under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981.

"It is extremely disturbing to think that someone is taking pot shots at birds or even specifically targeting peregrines and we are very keen to speak to anyone with information about who may be responsible," added Mr Barton.
