Criminals tracked by CCTV system
Registration plate
The scheme has proved successful in other areas of England
A camera system that reads car registration plates has been launched to track criminals.

CCTV cameras placed along some routes into Bath have been equipped with Automatic Number Plate Recognition.

The plate of all passing vehicles is fed into a central system. If it is suspicious, the car can be intercepted by nearby patrols.

The technology was trialled for two months and has proved to be a valuable tool in crime detection, police said.

The system can check for stolen vehicles, vehicles suspected of being used in a crime, disqualified drivers or individuals that are wanted on warrant.

If the scheme proves successful it will be extended to other areas within the Avon and Somerset Police force area.

A spokesman said the system was a great tool that had already had a big impact across other parts of the country.
