Fans face nightmare rail journey

Football fans staying in the seaside resort of Weston-super-Mare could face a difficult rail journey to the FA cup semi-finals at the weekend.

Avon and Somerset Police say some 600 fans, heading to the matches at Cardiff's Millennium Stadium, are expected to stay there.

But the Patchway tunnel, near Bristol, will be closed while new drainage systems are installed.

Trains will be diverted via Gloucester, a much longer route.

South Wales Police are also warning fans travelling by car to leave plenty of time for their journey.

Extra police

Avon and Somerset Police say they will mount a high-profile operation in Weston to crack down on trouble-makers.

Although there were no incidents in the resort last year, police brought in dog units and extra officers.

Police also stopped coaches heading to the seaside town, warning fans about their conduct and telling them if they were caught misbehaving they could face a football banning order.

Ch Insp Nick Walker said: "Last year's operation was highly successful. It was the result of good partnership work, combined with police-led intelligence.

"Positive co-operation from licensees and door staff and robust high-profile policing ensured there was no football-related disorder in the town."
